If the staircase is already painted, our painters will scrape off the old paint on the steps and handrail with a small scraper. We fill in knicks and holes with wood putty or pollyfiller and sand the railing down until its smooth. Then we begin with the handrail or banister. That’s why we use a ladder instead to get the outside of the staircase if the dimensions call for it. Once dry, we apply up to three coats of varnish or desired paint.
